About Our ProductsIn the past, consumption of nuts has been discouraged because of their fat content. It is now widely recognized that the monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats in nuts (perhaps combined with other nutrients in nuts) may reduce the risk of heart disease. Scientific evidence suggests, but does not prove, that eating 1.5 ounces of most nuts as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease. Types of nuts included in this health claim are: almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts, pecans, pistachio and walnuts. Almonds, walnuts and pistachios are good sources of manganese, molybdenum, phosphorus and copper. Hazelnuts and pistachios are good sources of thiamine. Almonds and hazelnuts are excellent sources of vitamin E. A 30g serving of walnuts provides over 2 grams of Omega-3 fatty acids. Nuts are specifically mentioned in the DGA as a source of beneficial fats for children (DHHS/USDA, 2005).
